Genogram training in Adelaide

The Therapeutic Use of Genograms is a one-day course on using genograms as a live clinical tool. Genograms are highly effective for gathering information about family patterns, interactions and values, and they act as an intervention in their own right when used well.

A genogram is not a homework sheet

Most practitioners have drawn one. Far fewer have used one in the room, with the family watching, as the thing that shifts the conversation. That is the difference this day is about.

In this training you will be guided to use genograms in assessment and intervention with individuals, couples, children and families, and to keep working when the drawing surfaces something difficult.

Course content

What the day covers

  • Genograms in assessment and in intervention, with individuals, couples, children and families
  • How to engage children in the genogram process so it is theirs, not something done to them
  • How to manage high affect or reactivity when the drawing surfaces something painful
  • How to incorporate creative modalities into genogram work
  • Ethical considerations including cultural safety
  • Working with LGBTQIA+ clients, and with children in residential care, where family structure does not fit the standard symbols

Who this genogram training is for

  • Counsellors, psychologists, social workers and occupational therapists
  • School wellbeing staff and student counsellors
  • Child protection, out-of-home care and community-sector practitioners
  • Anyone who takes a family history and wants it to do more work than sitting in a file

No prior systemic training is assumed. Genograms are also introduced within our two-day Family Therapy Foundations course, so if you want the broader systemic frame as well, start there.

Questions

Genogram training: common questions

When is the next genogram training in Adelaide?

Dates for the next intake are being confirmed. Register your interest and we will tell you before they go public.

Do I need family therapy training first?

No. The day assumes no prior systemic training. If you want the wider systemic frame as well, Family Therapy Foundations is the two-day course to start with.

Is a genogram just a family tree?

No. A family tree records who is related to whom. A genogram records patterns, relationships, quality of connection, repetition across generations and the meaning a family makes of all of it, and drawing one with a family in the room is itself an intervention.

How do you handle families that do not fit the standard symbols?

Directly, and it is one of the reasons the day exists. We cover work with LGBTQIA+ clients, children in residential care, and any family structure the conventional notation was not built for, alongside cultural safety.

Can you run it at our organisation?

Yes. Every AkindaCo course can be delivered in-house and shaped around your team's client group.
